A Third Thing We Don't Know About You

I have an uncanny ability to remember song lyrics.  In general, my memory is good, but my ability to recall the words and melodies of songs is formidable.  My chops are particurly strong in the genre of 1980s television theme songs.

I once found myself stuck in traffic with a car full of people, one of whom, clearly unaware of my prowess, challenged the rest of us to a theme song sing-off.  Needless to say, I defeated him soundly, when he confused Growing Pains' "As Long As We've Got Each Other" and Family Ties' "Without Us."

Rookie mistake.

Sha la la la.

Do you have a good memory?  Is it getting better or worse with age?

  1. I USED to have an amazing memory for numbers - birthdays and phone numbers specifically but now I'm lucky if I remember my own phone number. sigh. I literally used to hear a phone number once and it would be forever remembered. My husband has a crazy memory for ridiculous trivia. No one cares, it never matters but it's pretty amazing. I just wish he could remember what I told him yesterday.

Remembering lyrics of songs is a dream of mine. I love to sing but I end up making up a mush of words to sing out loud. I get lots of weird looks from people.

  2. Delightful. How do you do that? Amazing.

My long term memory remains relatively intact, though my memory tends to be visual. Like Becca, I used to have a remarkable memory for numbers (as a child, I memorized license plates and phone numbers and did calculations in my head, for fun).

I never remember jokes, and my short term memory has become a joke. I have the most difficulty remembering names... but lately, I'm forgetting to worry about it!

  3. I have a great memory but for nothing as crowd-pleasing as yours, Kristen! I remember my life like it was a sitcom, I remember the people like they were characters, and I remember all my thoughts. Needless to say, this is all very helpful writing memoir.

By the way, I love to sing but can never get any lyrics right and my husband knows the lyrics to tons of sons but can't sing. We're quite a match except that I hate to blunder and then be corrected.

  4. I have an abysmal memory. I can't remember a phone number for 10 seconds. I'm pretty good with theme songs, but that's just because I watch too much TV.

  5. I used to be able to recognize any song in the first few bars played on the radio.
Now... I'm limited to those that came out before my kids were born because I rarely listen to adult music anymore ;)

But when it comes small things, my memory is horrible!
